Arrested Cracks in Nonlinear Lattice Models of Brittle Fracture
We generalize lattice models of brittle fracture to arbitrary nonlinear force
laws and study the existence of arrested semi-infinite cracks. Unlike what is
seen in the discontinuous case studied to date, the range in driving
displacement for which these arrested cracks exist is very small. Also, our
results indicate that small changes in the vicinity of the crack tip can have
an extremely large effect on arrested cracks. Finally, we briefly discuss the
possible relevance of our findings to recent experiments.Comment: submitted to PRE, Rapid Communication
Nonlinear lattice model of viscoelastic Mode III fracture
We study the effect of general nonlinear force laws in viscoelastic lattice
models of fracture, focusing on the existence and stability of steady-state
Mode III cracks. We show that the hysteretic behavior at small driving is very
sensitive to the smoothness of the force law. At large driving, we find a Hopf
bifurcation to a straight crack whose velocity is periodic in time. The
frequency of the unstable bifurcating mode depends on the smoothness of the
potential, but is very close to an exact period-doubling instability. Slightly
above the onset of the instability, the system settles into a exactly
period-doubled state, presumably connected to the aforementioned bifurcation
structure. We explicitly solve for this new state and map out its
velocity-driving relation
Frankly, we do give a damn: the relationship between profanity and honesty
There are two conflicting perspectives regarding the relationship between profanity and dishonesty. These two forms of norm-violating behavior share common causes and are often considered to be positively related. On the other hand, however, profanity is often used to express one’s genuine feelings and could therefore be negatively related to dishonesty. In three studies, we explored the relationship between profanity and honesty. We examined profanity and honesty first with profanity behavior and lying on a scale in the lab (Study 1; = 276), then with a linguistic analysis of real-life social interactions on Facebook (Study 2; = 73,789), and finally with profanity and integrity indexes for the aggregate level of U.S. states (Study 3; = 50 states). We found a consistent positive relationship between profanity and honesty; profanity was associated with less lying and deception at the individual level and with higher integrity at the society level
Continuum field description of crack propagation
We develop continuum field model for crack propagation in brittle amorphous
solids. The model is represented by equations for elastic displacements
combined with the order parameter equation which accounts for the dynamics of
defects. This model captures all important phenomenology of crack propagation:
crack initiation, propagation, dynamic fracture instability, sound emission,
crack branching and fragmentation.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett. Additional

Highly Luminescent Transparent Cs2AgxNa1−xBiyIn1−yCl6 Perovskite Films Produced by Single-Source Vacuum Deposition
Thermal deposition of halide perovskites as a universal and scalable route to transparent thin films becomes highly challenging in the case of lead-free double perovskites, requiring the evaporation dynamics of multiple metal halide sources to be balanced or a single-phase precursor preliminary synthesized to achieve a reliable control over the composition and the phase of the final films. In the present Letter, the feasibility of the single-source vacuum deposition of microcrystalline Cs2AgxNa1-xBiyIn1-yCl6 double perovskites into corresponding transparent nanocrystalline films while preserving the bulk spectral and structural properties is shown. The perovskite films produced from the most emissive powders with x = 0.40 and y = 0.01 revealed a photoluminescence quantum yield of 85%, highlighting thermal evaporation as a promising approach to functional perovskite-based optical materials
Energy radiation of moving cracks
The energy radiated by moving cracks in a discrete background is analyzed.
The energy flow through a given surface is expressed in terms of a generalized
Poynting vector. The velocity of the crack is determined by the radiation by
the crack tip. The radiation becomes more isotropic as the crack velocity
approaches the instability threshold.Comment: 7 pages, embedded figure

Untangling a Web of Lies: Exploring Automated Detection of Deception in Computer-Mediated Communication
Safeguarding organizations against opportunism and severe deception in computer-mediated communication (CMC) presents a major challenge to CIOs and IT managers. New insights into linguistic cues of deception derive from the speech acts innate to CMC. Applying automated text analysis to archival email exchanges in a CMC system as part of a reward program, we assess the ability of word use (micro-level), message development (macro-level), and intertextual exchange cues (meta-level) to detect severe deception by business partners. We empirically assess the predictive ability of our framework using an ordinal multilevel regression model. Results indicate that deceivers minimize the use of referencing and self-deprecation but include more superfluous descriptions and flattery. Deceitful channel partners also over structure their arguments and rapidly mimic the linguistic style of the account manager across dyadic e-mail exchanges. Thanks to its diagnostic value, the proposed framework can support firms’ decision-making and guide compliance monitoring system development
Integrated System Built for Small-Molecule Semiconductors via High-Throughput Approaches
High-throughput synthesis of solution-processable structurally variable small-molecule semiconductors is both an opportunity and a challenge. A large number of diverse molecules provide a possibility for quick material discovery and machine learning based on experimental data. However, the diversity of molecular structure leads to the complexity of molecular properties, such as solubility, polarity, and crystallinity, which poses great challenges to solution processing and purification. Here, we first report an integrated system for the high-throughput synthesis, purification, and characterization of molecules with a large variety. Based on the principle of Like dissolves like, we combine theoretical calculations and a robotic platform to accelerate the purification of those molecules. With this platform, a material library containing 125 molecules and their optical-electric properties was built within a timeframe of weeks. More importantly, the high repeatability of recrystallization we design is a reliable approach to further upgrading and industrial production
Ultrathin and lightweight organic solar cells with high flexibility
Application-specific requirements for future lighting, displays and photovoltaics will include large-area, low-weight and mechanical resilience for dual-purpose uses such as electronic skin, textiles and surface conforming foils. Here we demonstrate polymer-based photovoltaic devices on plastic foil substrates less than 2 μm thick, with equal power conversion efficiency to their glass-based counterparts. They can reversibly withstand extreme mechanical deformation and have unprecedented solar cell-specific weight. Instead of a single bend, we form a random network of folds within the device area. The processing methods are standard, so the same weight and flexibility should be achievable in light emitting diodes, capacitors and transistors to fully realize ultrathin organic electronics. These ultrathin organic solar cells are over ten times thinner, lighter and more flexible than any other solar cell of any technology to date
